Thailand 2005 & 2003

BEFORE AND AFTER TSUNAMI

What a place! We went three times to this backpacker’s paradise. A proud nation and the only of the region that managed to stay free of colonialism, the Thais have been working hard during the past decades to transform unspoilt beaches and remote jungle in some of world’s best resorts. Is this good or bad? It’s up to each to decide. We are impressed with the Thai resilience and creativity and we  L.O.V.E. the local cuisine.

For our third trip to South East Asia we wanted to see how Thailand has coped with the aftermath of the 2004 Tsunami.

So in September 2005 we traveled by motorbike for three weeks to several islands in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, photographing how the fragile underwater ecosystem survived the disaster and learning how the tourism infrastructure was being rebuilt. But the most emotional experience was  meeting the colorful gipsy fishermen of Koh Lanta.
